In Austria and Germany, older employees enjoy stronger legal protections, including the ability to contest dismissals within two weeks, and safeguards for those employed for at least six months without works council consent.

Age discrimination remains widespread: according to Germany’s Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency, 45% of people have experienced age bias, with 39% reporting workplace disadvantages such as terminations or contract refusals. Experts urge stronger protections and greater awareness to combat this issue, emphasizing the need for companies to uphold fair employment practices respecting the valuable contributions of older workers.
