AfD Secures Historic Win in Sachsen-Anhalt as CDU Suffers Worst Defeat

In the 2026 Sachsen-Anhalt state election, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a record-breaking 43.8% of the vote, marking its strongest performance to date in the region. This significant surge established AfD as the dominant political force in the state, though it fell short of an absolute majority, securing 39 seats against the 42 needed.

Conversely, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) faced a historic defeat, garnering only 17.2% of the vote—their worst result ever in Sachsen-Anhalt. The election saw a notably high voter turnout of approximately 78%, the highest since German reunification, involving around 1.7 million eligible voters.

The results have intensified political pressure on CDU leader Sven Schulze, who acknowledged the difficult outcome and the need to evaluate his future role within the party.
