AfD Victory in Saxony-Anhalt Fuels SPD Debate Over Ukraine Policy

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured a commanding win in Saxony-Anhalt's recent election, capturing 43.8% of the vote and becoming the largest faction with 39 seats. This electoral outcome has reignited fierce debate within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) over its stance on Ukraine and Russia.

SPD foreign policy spokesman Ralf Stegner, representing a growing minority within the party, has called for a reassessment of Germany's Ukraine policy. He criticized the rapid military buildup and advocated for enhanced diplomatic initiatives to curb the conflict. Stegner lamented that the SPD allowed populists to dominate the peace discourse and warned that excessive military expenditure, at the expense of social spending, fuels right-wing populism. Since February 2022, Germany has committed over 100 billion euros in civilian and military aid to Ukraine.

SPD state chair Isabel Cademartori echoed the need for policy realignment to better support peace efforts, contrasting with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and other party leaders who maintain firm support for continuing military aid. Pistorius dismissed AfD rhetoric as fearmongering and affirmed the party's commitment to Ukraine support.

Meanwhile, AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund signaled his intent to govern Sachsen-Anhalt, even if only by a narrow one-seat majority. Siegmund emphasized the party's stance on arms production linked to migration policy and internal security, referencing the controversial potential establishment of Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems in the state. Coalition talks remain complicated as most parties exclude cooperation with the AfD, though the BSW party has shown openness to dialogue without entering coalition.

The AfD's electoral success thus not only shifts power dynamics in Saxony-Anhalt but also intensifies SPD's internal divisions over foreign policy and social spending priorities in the context of the Ukraine conflict.
