Afghan Refugee Abii Faizan Uses Music as a Beacon of Hope on DSDS

Abii Faizan, a 24-year-old Afghan refugee and contestant on Germany’s popular talent show DSDS, shared his deeply moving story of fleeing Afghanistan alone at the age of 15. Since his arrival in Germany in 2015, Faizan has not seen his family, who remain in Afghanistan, communicating only sporadically via WhatsApp. Describing his escape as leaving behind “home, family, and everything familiar overnight,” he conveyed the profound emotional toll of uncertainty and separation.

For Faizan, music is more than a passion—it is a source of healing and motivation. His heartfelt performance on DSDS moved juror Isi Glück to tears, highlighting the powerful emotional resonance of his journey. Faizan aspires to win the competition, hoping this success will enable him to reunite his family in Germany despite the complexities of Afghan travel and family reunification policies.

Supported by his foster parents Astrid and Bernd Feith since his arrival, Faizan emphasized that positive feedback from the show’s judges renews his dedication “for my family, for my dream, and for my own path.” His story highlights the role of music as a therapeutic outlet and empowering force for refugees navigating trauma and uncertain futures in Germany.
