Altmark Faces Urgent Healthcare Access Challenges Amid Depopulation and Political Neglect

The Altmark region in Saxony-Anhalt is grappling with critical healthcare access issues amidst ongoing rural depopulation and perceived political neglect. Steve Kanitz, the district administrator of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel and an SPD member, has spotlighted a shortage of 21 family doctors in the area, highlighting the pressing need for sturdier medical infrastructure. Kanitz advocates for the establishment of more medical care centers to ensure residents have timely and adequate healthcare.

An acute problem compounded by transportation challenges, Kanitz emphasizes that the improvement of public transportation (ÖPNV) is essential to enable patients to reach these facilities effectively. This concern is particularly significant given the region’s vulnerability tied to economic factors, such as its dependence on Volkswagen as a dominant employer, which Kanitz warns poses risks: "If VW has a cold, we catch the flu here."

In addition to healthcare provision, community members at a recent roundtable in Zichtau voiced worries about depopulation, rising vacant properties, and what they see as political indifference toward rural issues. These discussions reflect residents’ attempts to maintain and shape their homeland despite dwindling population trends.

Kanitz further called for greater autonomy for municipalities in allocating state funds, urging the government to reduce bureaucratic barriers that hamper effective use of resources. He argues that local authorities are best positioned to identify and address community needs promptly.
