Battery Storage Installations in Germany Surge by 91% in 2026
Germany experiences a 91% surge in battery storage installations during 2026, fueling energy transition and prompting policy reform proposals.
Key details
- Battery storage capacity in Germany increased by 91% in 2026, adding 8.2 GWh from over 500,000 new units.
- Large-scale battery storage installations quadrupled, contributing significantly to market growth.
- Fraunhofer Institute estimates that expanded battery capacity could have saved nearly €4 billion by storing excess renewable energy.
- BSW-Solar proposes 15 reforms to remove investment barriers and improve grid integration of storage systems.
- Experts emphasize the need to increase storage installation pace four to five times by 2030 to meet renewable energy targets.
Germany has witnessed a remarkable 91% increase in battery storage installations during the first nine months of 2026, significantly advancing the country's energy transition efforts. Over 500,000 new battery units were installed, adding approximately 8.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of capacity compared to the previous year, according to the Federal Association of Solar Economy (BSW-Solar).
Large-scale battery storage developments have seen even more dramatic growth, quadrupling in new installations and bolstering overall market expansion. These batteries play a critical role in integrating renewable energy sources efficiently and reducing costs. The Fraunhofer Institute estimates that if an additional 80 GWh of battery capacity had been available last year, consumers and the federal budget could have saved nearly four billion euros by storing excess renewable energy.
BSW-Solar's CEO, Carsten Körnig, highlighted the significance of this growth, stating the need for a "storage booster" to sustain momentum, with projections to surpass 10 GWh of new storage capacity by the end of 2026. However, experts warn that the current installation pace must increase four to fivefold by 2030 to meet Germany's renewable integration goals effectively.
To accelerate this growth, BSW-Solar has outlined 15 reform proposals aimed at easing investment barriers, optimizing grid utilization, and lowering system costs. Key recommendations include streamlining the operation of battery systems alongside solar and wind installations, mandating grid operators to prioritize battery storage at substations, and improving grid management to capture surplus solar energy during temporary congestion.
The association urges policymakers to prioritize these reforms in forthcoming legislation, emphasizing that enhanced battery storage capacity will improve network efficiency and contribute to an affordable and reliable energy transition for Germany.
