Berlin Football Faces Persistent Discrimination and Calls for Stronger Measures in 2024/2025 Season

The Berlin Football Association (BFV) has released an in-depth analysis revealing persistent and often hidden discrimination within Berlin's amateur football during the 2024/2025 season. The BFV's Antidiscrimination Office compiled data from multiple sources, including match reports in DFBnet, emails, and submissions via the BFV website and the TEAM BERLIN APP. Özgür Özvatan, BFV Vice President for Social Responsibility, highlighted a "significant and problematic hidden field of discrimination" within local football. He stressed the need for enhanced low-threshold reporting systems and better training for referees and sports judiciary officials, noting that current structures frequently fail to properly identify or interpret discriminatory behavior.

While this data exposes ongoing social challenges in football culture, it aligns with wider concerns about negative behavior in amateur football across Germany. Although statistics show a slight decrease in violence-related match abandonments nationwide, critics argue that underreporting, especially by referees fearing retaliation, clouds the true picture.

To address related issues, the German Football Association (DFB) plans to implement a 'Stopp-Konzept' starting summer 2024, enabling referees to temporarily halt games to defuse violent situations, alongside mentorship programs aimed at young referees. These measures strive to foster respect and integrity in football communities.

The BFV underlined the critical importance of strengthening reporting structures and qualifications to protect the integrity of TEAM BERLIN and to confront discrimination effectively.
