Berlin Withdraws Olympic Bid Amid Political Shift and Public Opposition

Berlin has officially decided to withdraw its bid to host the Olympic Games, a move prompted by recent political changes and diminishing public support. This decision, expected to be formally announced at a press conference on Thursday, follows the electoral victory of the Left party and statements by Elif Eralp, their mayoral candidate, which cast significant doubt on the bid's viability.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB)'s evaluation report favored Munich and the Rhein-Ruhr region over Berlin, citing the capital's difficulties with citizen referendums—a factor not incorporated in its state constitution. Unlike Munich and Köln-Rhein-Ruhr, where referendums on Olympic hosting yielded positive results, Berlin struggled to gain similar public endorsement.

Kaweh Niroomand, Berlin's Olympic commissioner, criticized Eralp's comments for causing insecurity among local sports associations and undermining the city's prospects. Eralp argued that the election outcome reflected broad public opposition to hosting the Olympics, frustrating supporters of the bid.

With Berlin stepping back, the DOSB will decide between Munich and Rhein-Ruhr to represent Germany in the international race for the Olympics. Meanwhile, in Hamburg, another city recently sidelined from Olympic hosting after 55% of voters rejected the bid in a referendum, sports authorities are redirecting focus. Hamburg aims to champion sustainable sports initiatives and climate neutrality by 2035, looking to transform local sports clubs through renewable energy and eco-friendly practices.
