Cash Withdrawals Decline as Germany Sees Shift Toward Digital Payments

Germany is witnessing a notable shift in its payment landscape, with cashless transactions on the rise while traditional cash withdrawal options dwindle. According to the Deutsche Bundesbank, card payments surged to about 14.5 billion transactions in 2025, an 11% increase over the previous year, now representing 43% of all non-bank payments. Despite this growth in digital payments, cash remains significant for many Germans.

However, the number of ATMs in Germany has decreased by 3% to roughly 48,000 in 2025, down from approximately 49,700 the previous year. This decline is attributed to evolving consumer habits and increasing cost pressures within the banking sector. The reduction of ATM infrastructure has raised political concerns about ensuring sufficient cash accessibility, particularly in rural areas where alternatives may be limited.

Emerging solutions include cash-back options at supermarkets and convenience stores, where customers can withdraw up to 200 euros during purchases made with their Girocard, often subject to a minimum purchase requirement. These adaptations aim to maintain cash availability despite fewer standalone ATMs.

The ongoing transition reflects broader trends towards cashless payments while highlighting challenges in balancing modernization with inclusivity and accessibility in Germany's payment systems.
