CDU Leader Friedrich Merz Faces Internal Dissent Amid Poll Declines

Friedrich Merz, Chancellor and CDU leader, remains resolute in his role despite mounting internal challenges and poor poll ratings, according to Thorsten Frei, head of the Union parliamentary group. Speaking on ZDF's "Markus Lanz," Frei stated that Merz has never considered stepping down and emphasized the significant obstacles the government confronts, which persist regardless of leadership.

Frei described the CDU's poll situation as "terrible" but highlighted that the party still stands as the most successful Christian Democratic party in Europe. He also pointed to the critical test facing the current schwarz-rote coalition: whether it can push through major reforms this autumn, including groundbreaking pension reforms from the Rentenkommission, which Frei called a "century project" balancing interests across generations.

However, internal party dissent is palpable. Bernd Prange, a CDU member and mayor of Altmärkische Höhe, caused controversy by donating 10,000 euros to the AfD's campaign, aiming to provoke change within the CDU. Prange criticized parts of the CDU for their perceived alignment with leftist policies and called for a clear stop to this trend. He expressed hopes that the AfD would secure a majority in the upcoming Saxony-Anhalt state elections on September 6, which he believes could lead to the removal of Merz from the party leadership.

This dissent highlights internal fractures amid declining support for the CDU, contrasting with statements from party leadership defending Merz's tenure and the party's ongoing efforts to implement significant reforms. The coming months will test the coalition's capacity to maintain cohesion and deliver policy achievements that might restore confidence in the CDU's leadership and direction.
