Lübcke was killed in June 2019 by right-wing extremist Stephan E. due to his liberal stance on refugee policy. Merz laid a wreath alongside Lübcke's widow, Irmgard Braun-Lübcke, and other family members, engaging in a detailed conversation about the tragic night they remember vividly.

Merz praised Lübcke as a devoted family man and a politician respected across party lines, while acknowledging that their relationship with the Lübcke family had been strained in the past due to his earlier controversial remarks about Lübcke's legacy.
