Child Confinement and Patient Abuse Cases Spark Outrage in Germany

Several distressing abuse cases in Germany have surfaced in 2026, involving the severe confinement and abuse of vulnerable individuals, prompting criminal trials and public concern.

In Siegerland, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), a 12-year-old girl named Mara was rescued after seven years of being confined by her mother Rosemarie G. and her grandparents. The family is charged with bodily harm and deprivation of liberty. Prosecutors revealed Mara was never allowed to leave her home, attend school, or receive medical care, resulting in severe psychological trauma, developmental delays, and health issues such as vitamin D deficiency affecting her bones. Police intervention in September 2022 ended her isolation, uncovering a traumatic life of abandonment and neglect. The trial has been delayed multiple times, including an incident where the mother attempted suicide. Due to the case’s sensitivity, the court excluded the public from the proceedings. The family’s home in Attendorn, Sauerland, outwardly appears normal but served as Mara’s prison.

In another grave case in NRW, Alexander T., a 32-year-old nurse from Dortmund, stands accused of sexually abusing at least five patients at the University Hospital Essen between 2017 and 2025. Victims ranged from age 14 to 43, some abused during anesthesia or coma. He also allegedly raped a conscious 14-year-old. Disturbing evidence including videos and photos were found in his home, and a 30-year-old accomplice, Lisa-Marie Z., faces charges for instigating the crimes. Alexander T. has been in custody since August 2025.

Additionally, in Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg, Adrian V., a 31-year-old Romanian man, is on trial for the abduction and sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl at the Rulantica water park in August 2025. The girl was lured out, abused in a cornfield, and left traumatized several kilometers from the park. Adrian V. confessed, expressing remorse while citing drug and alcohol use. Sentencing is expected March 2, with up to 4 years and 9 months imprisonment possible.
