CSU Deputy Manfred Weber Criticizes Markus Söder, Calls for Party Renewal and Special Convention

Pressure is mounting within the Christian Social Union (CSU) as deputy leader Manfred Weber publicly criticizes the party leadership under Markus Söder, challenging the current political direction and calling for a strategic reorientation. In a detailed letter to all CSU representatives over the Pentecost holidays, Weber refrained from naming Söder directly but sent clear messages questioning key policies and leadership style.

Weber, who holds a prominent role as head of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, urged the CSU to hold a special party convention to define a clear geopolitical course. He emphasized the necessity of stronger European cooperation on security and defense, advocating for Europe to develop its own military capabilities such as joint drone defense, cyber systems, and satellite infrastructure.

The letter criticized reliance on Söder’s High-Tech Agenda as too narrow, and expressed concern over policies like the Mütter-Rente and VAT reductions in hospitality sectors, which Weber considers inadequate amid strained public finances. He underlined the need for the CSU to earn public support through innovative ideas rather than financial incentives.

Furthermore, Weber highlighted that the party’s traditional assumption—that economic prosperity and globalization would guarantee political stability—has been shattered, calling for a political and societal renewal that reestablishes the CSU as a true people’s party uniting diverse societal groups. He referenced CSU legends such as Theo Waigel, Franz Josef Strauß, and Edmund Stoiber as examples of courageous, future-oriented leadership, subtly contrasting their legacy with the current leadership.

The leadership challenge is underscored by recent election results, where Weber received 93.7% support among vice-chairs, surpassing Söder’s 83.6%, Söder’s weakest personal result as CSU leader to date. Weber’s critical stance signals a significant internal dispute within the CSU as the party weighs its political future and strategic priorities.
