Deniz Undav Breaks Eight-Game Goal Drought, Boosts VfB Stuttgart in Champions League

Deniz Undav ended a challenging goal drought by scoring his first goal of the 2026 season during VfB Stuttgart's commanding 3-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League. The captain had not found the net in his previous seven to eight competitive matches, a spell that brought criticism and doubts, even leading to exclusion from the German national team’s Nations League squad by coach Jürgen Klopp. Despite this, Undav remained confident, emphasizing the team's success over individual statistics.

Undav’s goal, scored in the 29th minute, was pivotal in securing Stuttgart’s position in the Champions League group standings, where they currently sit fourth behind Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona, and Aston Villa. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß praised Undav's broader contributions beyond scoring, highlighting his leadership and deep understanding of the game.

Addressing the pressure and expectations following a stellar previous season of 25 goals and 14 assists, Undav remarked, “Of course it is liberating. It is always nice to score after a dry spell.” He also downplayed personal scoring urgency, stating, “I can also have zero goals and we will play Champions League again next season, then I take that too.” Teammate Josha Vagnoman supported him, noting Undav’s valuable talent and influence.

As Stuttgart prepares to face Hamburger SV in their next Bundesliga match, Undav’s breakthrough offers renewed optimism for the club’s Champions League campaign and his personal form.
