Exciting DFB-Pokal Second Round Set with VAR Introduced

The second round of the 2026-2027 DFB-Pokal has delivered a host of intriguing matchups, including a high-profile clash between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen. The draw, conducted by former player Bastian Schweinsteiger at Dortmund's German Sports Museum, also set Hertha BSC against regional league side SSV Jeddeloh II, who caused an upset by eliminating a second-division team earlier. Another notable fixture is Dynamo Dresden versus Bundesliga newcomer FC Schalke 04, alongside competitive ties like HSV versus Eintracht Frankfurt and SC Paderborn against VfB Stuttgart.

Marking a new era in the tournament, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be used for the first time in the early DFB-Pokal rounds rather than just the later stages. Although some protests have emerged, with FC Augsburg’s managing director Michael Ströll among the critics, there are no plans to remove VAR at this point.

Additionally, the DFB has increased the prize money for this season. Participating teams will each receive approximately €250,000, while the tournament winner is set to receive about €13 million. The second round is scheduled for October 27-28, extending through knockout stages to the final in Berlin on May 29, 2027.
