Far-right Groups and Civil Observers Mobilize to Monitor Saxony-Anhalt State Election

As the Saxony-Anhalt state election vote count begins on Sunday evening, both far-right groups and civil society organizations are actively engaging in election observation efforts. Approximately 2,600 polling stations are involved in this electoral process, with ballot boxes being emptied shortly after 6 PM. The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has encouraged its supporters to act as election observers, asserting their legal right to monitor the vote. AfD figures such as Ulrich Siegmund and party leader Tino Chrupalla have promoted vigilance, focusing particularly on potential irregularities in mail-in voting.

The right-wing network Ein Prozent has initiated an interactive 'election observer map' to recruit volunteers for polling station monitoring, emphasizing safeguarding "hard-earned patriotic votes." Although Ein Prozent does not claim state-organized fraud, it expresses concern about leftist NGOs possibly influencing the election outcomes. The group has supplied observer guidelines with advice on identifying errors in vote counting, such as invalid votes wrongly discarded.

In contrast, the platform Wahlen is deploying over 90 election observers, including more than 80 short-term and 12 long-term observers, across Saxony-Anhalt. Their mission is to ensure the election adheres to international electoral standards and to counteract conspiracy theories regarding the election integrity. Their findings will be publicly reported the day after the election.

Public access to polling places is allowed under election regulations, with officials responsible for maintaining order and addressing any disturbances. This array of observation efforts reflects heightened sensitivities around election transparency and trust, particularly as the AfD’s political influence grows within the state.

These developments occur amid ongoing political debates about the AfD’s potential impact on Saxony-Anhalt, though those discussions center more on economic and governance issues than on the election monitoring itself.
