Fuel Shortages and Soaring Prices Grip Germany Amid Middle East Tensions

Germany faces rising fuel prices and localized shortages amid geopolitical tensions affecting oil markets. On April 6, the HEM gas station in Schönefeld, south of Berlin, reported running out of Super E10 and E5 fuels due to strong demand, leaving only Super+ available at 2.359 euros per liter. The station, known for its competitive prices, expected deliveries later in the evening but gave no exact time.

Fuel prices in Berlin have jumped noticeably, with E10 averaging 2.209 euros per liter as of Monday following recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran. The German Automobile Club (ADAC) reported a historic high for diesel prices over the weekend, with motorists paying an average of 2.425 euros per liter—a surge exceeding previous records by more than 10 cents.

Bundeswirtschaftsministerin Katherina Reiche dismissed calls to reduce gasoline taxes, referencing stable fuel prices in neighboring countries like Italy and Austria. Since last week, oil companies have been restricted to adjusting prices just once a day to help moderate volatility.

This latest development marks a consolidation of rising fuel costs in Germany, influenced by external conflicts and heightened demand leading to temporary shortages in some areas.
