Funding Commitment for Mitte-Deutschland-Verbindung Expansion Remains Firm Despite Ministry Changes

The financial backing for the expansion and electrification of the Mitte-Deutschland-Verbindung railway line in Thuringia remains secure despite recent changes at the Federal Ministry of Transport. Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary at the ministry, assured that the funding promise for this West-East railway corridor is fully valid and will not be reduced following the replacement of Patrick Schnieder by Steffen Bilger as minister. The project entails upgrading the railway between Weimar, Jena, Gera, and Gößnitz, including electrification and dual-track expansion, with investment needs running into the hundreds of millions of euros.

Thuringia’s Prime Minister Mario Voigt confirmed receiving a near-guarantee of support from Schnieder earlier in July and expressed optimism about the project's positive trajectory. The Bundestag must approve the financing plans starting in 2027. Current operations on the route mostly use diesel locomotives, but electric trains are expected to be running by 2031, easing connections from Dresden through Thuringia to the Rhine-Main and Ruhr regions. Construction costs are estimated at around 544 million euros, with some estimates suggesting up to 700 million euros will be needed by the decade's end.

Hirte emphasized the political consensus to realize this critical infrastructure project, which has long awaited significant progress. The upgraded Mitte-Deutschland-Verbindung line aims to enhance speed and capacity, fulfilling vital regional and national transport objectives.
