German Business Leaders Criticize Government's 'Firewall' Policy Against AfD, Warn of Economic Consequences

German entrepreneurs are increasingly voicing concerns over the government's political 'firewall' designed to isolate the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, arguing that it hampers necessary economic reforms and threatens the nation's business environment. Marion Horn criticized the government for focusing on protecting against the AfD at the cost of economic progress, stating that Germany cannot afford to delay bold reforms any longer.

Caspar Brockhaus, CEO of the Brockhaus Group—a measurement technology firm with annual revenues of 114 million euros—described the firewall as "crippling" economic dynamics in Germany. He urged more business leaders to break their silence and prioritize job protection and economic vitality over political divisions. Brockhaus warned that without courageous entrepreneurial leadership, traditional German companies risk decline or relocation abroad.

This critique emerges amid a broader frustration with German political rhetoric. Ulf Poschardt, publisher of WELT, lamented politicians’ repetitive and ineffective reform discussions, highlighting how the tendency to sugarcoat problems detracts from meaningful change and fuels public dissatisfaction.
