German Businesses Navigate Complex Export Controls Amid Geopolitical Challenges

On July 20, 2026, the IHK Export Control Day highlighted the growing complexities and challenges German companies face due to export control regulations amid shifting global trade dynamics.

CEO of IHK Nordschwarzwald, Tanja Traub, stressed to approximately 100 attendees the critical importance of export controls for international businesses to mitigate legal and economic risks. She explained that export controls mandate that goods, software, and technologies must only be delivered to authorized recipients and for permitted purposes, warning that violations can result in severe penalties.

Gunther Krichbaum, Member of Parliament and State Minister for Europe, emphasized that Germany’s Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) acts as an "Export-Enabler," facilitating lawful trading while ensuring adherence to sanctions and embargoes. Krichbaum underscored the need for transparency and cooperation between authorities and companies.

The discussion also highlighted the increasing impact of geopolitical tensions and protectionism, which are reshaping the global trade system and directly affecting Germany’s export-driven economy. Katharina Neckel from the German Chamber of Commerce (DIHK) pointed out the growing burden on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that often lack the resources of large corporations to maintain dedicated export control teams. She called for clearer regulations and sustained dialogue to make compliance manageable without stifling business opportunities.

Specialists from BAFA provided insights and fielded questions to participating companies, reinforcing the necessity of ongoing cooperation and communication in navigating export control landscapes.
