German Farmers' Association Calls for Political Innovations to Boost Agricultural Competitiveness

In a call for significant political change, the Deutscher Bauernverband (DBV) has urged enhanced support for Germany's agricultural sector, highlighting the need for policies that foster innovation and competitiveness ahead of the 2025 Bundestag elections. DBV President Joachim Rukwied stressed that the sector is under severe pressure from excessive bureaucracy and insufficient investment incentives, stating, "We need a policy that enables innovations rather than hinders them."

The DBV has outlined a ten-point plan focusing on reducing bureaucratic barriers and promoting high-tech innovations in agriculture. Key proposals include streamlining approval processes for plant protection products, reinforcing animal husbandry through construction funding, and ensuring EU agricultural exports are improved through better market access. Additionally, they advocate for agriculture's inclusion in national security discussions to secure supply chains and enhance resilience. Rukwied highlighted the integral role of agriculture in tackling climate challenges and ensuring food security, urging immediate action from the government post-retreat.

Furthermore, amidst competing narratives, the ÖDP (Ecological-Democratic Party) has introduced a contrasting view that calls for a societal structure that supports "prosperity without the compulsion to grow," indicating a growing discourse on whether economic productivity should be prioritized over ecological sustainability.
