German Firms Lead Innovation in Industrial Material Recycling with Sludge and Battery Advances

Two pioneering recycling developments in Germany are making waves for their innovative approaches to industrial material recycling. A company in Neuenhagen, Märkisch-Oderland, has gained nomination for the Brandenburg Innovation Award with its unique sludge recycling plant. This facility filters reusable gravel and sand from sludge primarily collected from tunnel boring operations and retention basins. The CEO, Sven Tirok, highlighted the plant’s technology as the first of its kind worldwide, combining mining-specific machine components with other recycling parts to create a novel method.

Meanwhile, in Krefeld, Accurec has been a battery recycling specialist for 31 years, focusing on recovering valuable industrial metals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt from batteries used in household appliances, electric vehicles, and storage systems. The company is set to open a new lithium recovery plant by December 2025, described as unique in Europe. The final construction phase began recently with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony attended by local officials and company leadership.
