German Gaming Industry Hits Record Growth in 2026 Amid Market Challenges

Germany's gaming market has surged to unprecedented heights in 2026, with over 40 million players fueling a robust industry boom. According to Welt, the combined market for games, hardware, and online services is projected to reach €9.38 billion in 2025, marking a 4% increase from the previous year. Hardware sales, particularly consoles and gaming PCs, have seen a 12% uptick, generating €3.4 billion in revenue. Notably, console sales grew 26%, and PC accessories rose by 13%. Mobile gaming also continues its strong expansion, achieving €2.67 billion in turnover, with in-app purchases constituting 97% of that revenue.

Despite the growing market, the rise in hardware prices has affected consumer behavior, with 37% of gamers delaying purchases due to cost hikes. While online services like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass have surpassed the €1 billion milestone in revenue, game sales themselves experienced a slight 1% decline to €4.95 billion. Furthermore, the German gaming sector faces a paradox: growth in revenue does not translate to increased employment, as industry jobs have declined by 3%.

The trade association 'game' is advocating for tax incentives to support the domestic gaming industry ahead of Gamescom 2026, cautioning against the EU's proposed Digital Fairness Act, which seeks to regulate monetization models in games more strictly.

This record expansion positions Germany as a significant player in the global gaming landscape, although challenges like rising prices and regulatory concerns temper the outlook. The industry’s development reflects broader economic resilience despite global uncertainties.
