German General Carsten Breuer Elected Chairman of NATO Military Committee

Generalinspekteur Carsten Breuer has been elected as the new chairman of NATO's Military Committee, marking a significant milestone for Germany's role within the alliance. Breuer, who will assume office in July 2027, was chosen during a meeting in Copenhagen, succeeding Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. His election reflects Germany's growing influence in NATO and its commitment to European defense amid ongoing security challenges.

Breuer, previously Chief of the German Armed Forces, has been instrumental in restructuring the Bundeswehr since March 2023 following the 'Zeitenwende'—a fundamental shift in German defense policy triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. His extensive military career began in 1984, including leadership roles such as heading the COVID crisis team in Chancellor Merkel's office. The election over Canadian General Staff Chief Jennie Carignan, who would have been the first woman in this position, underscores the trust NATO allies place in Germany's military leadership.

Germany currently leads Europe in defense spending, investing approximately 125 billion euros, and holds more top NATO military command positions than the United States, highlighting its enhanced defense capabilities. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed gratitude for NATO's confidence, acknowledging Germany's heightened responsibilities in a challenging security environment. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius praised Breuer's strategic foresight and his significant contributions to the Bundeswehr's reform, especially given Russia's increasing threat.

The chairman of NATO's Military Committee serves as the principal military advisor to the Secretary General, presenting recommendations from the alliance's chiefs of defense to NATO decision-making bodies. Breuer recognized the support from allies and emphasized the substantial tasks ahead to ensure security and peace in Europe.

With Breuer's election, Minister Pistorius now faces selecting a new Chief of the Bundeswehr, with Generalleutnant Christian Freuding among the potential candidates. Additionally, since June 2025, German General Ingo Gerhartz has commanded NATO's operational headquarters in Brunssum, Netherlands, responsible for NATO's eastern flank, further demonstrating Germany's deepening military responsibilities within the alliance.
