German General Carsten Breuer Elected Chairman of NATO Military Committee

German Generalinspekteur Carsten Breuer has been elected the new chairman of the NATO Military Committee, marking a significant milestone for both Germany and the alliance. Breuer, who will officially assume the role in July 2027, succeeds Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. The election took place during a meeting of NATO chiefs of staff in Copenhagen. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in Germany by NATO allies, underscoring the country’s responsibility amid challenging security environments. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius described Breuer's appointment as a 'historical task' for Germany, praising his strategic vision in the ongoing restructuring of the Bundeswehr. The chairman of the German Armed Forces Association, Colonel André Wüstner, highlighted the enormous importance of this leadership role for Germany and stressed the urgency of selecting Breuer’s successor to manage upcoming pivotal decisions regarding the Bundeswehr's future structure. Breuer himself acknowledged the vital support from NATO allies and emphasized that major tasks lie ahead to ensure security and peace in Europe and beyond. He won the position over Canadian General Staff Chief Jennie Carignan, who would have been the first woman to lead the committee.
