German Government Proposes Sweeping Reforms to Intelligence Services Amid Oversight Debate

The German coalition government has unveiled a comprehensive reform plan for the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) and the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV), aiming to bolster national security capabilities. Key proposals include extending data retention periods, granting the BND authority to sabotage hostile IT infrastructure, and allowing the BfV to conduct covert online searches and residential entries. Alongside these operational expansions, the Independent Control Board will gain enhanced oversight powers to approve potential rights infringements by the BfV.
