German Public Shows Strong Support for Bundeswehr Amid Rising Security Concerns

A recent 2026 survey conducted by the Center for Military Sociology and Security Studies of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) has revealed that the German public exhibits significant support for military readiness and the Bundeswehr in the face of ongoing security threats, particularly from Russia. Over 2,200 citizens were interviewed in the spring of 2026, providing a comprehensive snapshot of public opinion on defense and security issues.

Key survey results indicate that an overwhelming majority, 87%, trust the Bundeswehr, with 94% backing its core mission of defending Germany against military attacks. Additionally, 76% of respondents see NATO membership as indispensable for national security, while 58% support increased defense spending to enhance military capabilities. The newly introduced New Military Service, which began in early 2026, has gained acceptance from 59% of the population, especially attracting interest among young people eager to contribute voluntarily to national defense.

The survey highlights a general perception of Russia as a significant security threat throughout the population, with the exception of voters from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, who are less likely to share this view. This aligns with recent political shifts where AfD's electoral success, such as its victories in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, contrasts with the loss of the CDU party, sparking debates about the future political landscape.
