Germany Accelerates Digital Transformation with Schleswig-Holstein's Deutschland-Stack

At the fourth Digital Minister Conference (DMK) held in Berlin, federal collaboration to advance Germany's digital transformation took center stage. A highlight was the Deutschland-Stack (D-Stack) initiative spearheaded by Schleswig-Holstein, which aims to accelerate digital modernization across the economy, science, administration, and society. Digital Minister Dirk Schrödter stressed the importance of open standards and open-source solutions as foundational principles for the D-Stack's development. The initiative is grounded in a framework agreed upon at the conference and builds on a collaborative discussion paper developed with the digital economy.

The D-Stack is designed to create a compatible digital infrastructure that boosts Germany’s value creation potential while ensuring alignment with European open-source landscapes. The conference reaffirmed commitment to the 'digital only' principle to simplify administrative processes and reduce bureaucracy, with Schleswig-Holstein noted as a national leader due to its proposed Digitalization Acceleration Law. Additionally, modernization of registers—including online platforms developed with private partners—was highlighted as essential for improving administrative efficiency.

Established in 2024, the DMK continues to unify digital policy efforts across federal and state governments. This initiative demonstrates Germany's focused approach toward innovative, collaborative digital transformation, leveraging open technologies to position the country strongly in the European digital landscape.
