Germany Accepts First F-35 Fighter Jet, Signaling Major Defense Shift

In a landmark event for Germany’s military modernization, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius officially received the Bundeswehr's first F-35 fighter jet in Texas, marking a new chapter in Germany’s defense strategy and strengthening its transatlantic ties with the United States.

The F-35, lauded as one of the most advanced combat aircraft globally, is designed to replace Germany’s aging fleet of Tornado jets, which have been operational since the 1970s. Germany ordered 35 of these stealth-capable F-35A jets in 2022, with the first eight aircraft to remain in the US to facilitate pilot and technician training. The German airbase at Büchel is slated to be the home base for these jets by the end of 2027, with renovations costing approximately two billion euros underway to accommodate the new aircraft.

This acquisition is part of a broader €100 billion special fund initiated in response to the security challenges posed by the Ukraine war. The F-35 purchase also confirms Germany's commitment to maintaining its role in NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement, given the Bundeswehr’s long-standing authorization to potentially deploy US nuclear weapons stationed within its territory.

While this move reinforces Germany's strategic partnership with the US, it raises concerns regarding Germany’s dependence on American military technology. Critics highlight that the reliance on US software and maintenance could erode European defense autonomy, especially after Germany withdrew from a joint European combat aircraft program with France and Spain. Nevertheless, Pistorius dismissed such apprehensions, expressing confidence in the robustness of the bilateral cooperation.

Germany faces notable challenges, including compliance with stringent US technical security requirements and accelerating the transformation of its infrastructure to house the F-35 fleet. The project aims to complete the substantial upgrades at Büchel airbase in half the normal timeframe.
