Germany and France Advance Nuclear Cooperation with Joint Exercises and In-Flight Refueling

Germany and France have taken significant steps to implement their recently agreed nuclear partnership, marked by joint defense exercises and airborne refueling operations involving nuclear-capable jets. On Friday, the German-French Defense Council held an exercise at the Nörvenich Air Base near Cologne, where German and French soldiers performed maintenance work on each other's aircraft — a concrete sign of the deepening bilateral cooperation announced earlier this year by Chancellor Merz and President Macron.

This exercise inaugurates the practical phase of their nuclear collaboration and demonstrates enhanced military interoperability between the two nations. Furthermore, the Defense Council is set to decide that German soldiers will participate for the first time in a French nuclear exercise this autumn, intensifying joint operational readiness.

Complementing these efforts, a notable milestone occurred with the first in-flight refueling of French Rafale fighter jets over Germany. Two Rafale jets, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, were refueled midair by a French tanker aircraft while accompanied by two German Eurofighter jets.
