Germany and France Announce Enhanced Nuclear Deterrence Cooperation and Strategic Military Partnership

Germany and France have publicly committed to deepening their cooperation on nuclear deterrence and broader strategic military collaboration. This announcement was made on July 17, 2026, during a security meeting held at the Nörvenich airbase, attended by German Chancellor Merz and French President Macron, along with defense and foreign ministers from both countries.

At the meeting of the Deutsch-Französischer Verteidigungs- und Sicherheitsrat (DFVSR), the two nations underlined their intention to integrate nuclear deterrence efforts more closely. This includes planned participation of German soldiers in French military exercises scheduled for autumn 2026, marking a significant step toward joint operational readiness.

In addition to nuclear cooperation, Germany and France are advancing development of next-generation military technologies. They are collaborating on a 'system of systems' network for future combat aircraft and advancing the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), a platform-agnostic program aimed at developing manned and unmanned armored vehicles. They also plan to establish an AI-driven European data analysis platform designed to integrate intelligence from multiple military systems.

Strategic cooperation is further expanding into developing "Deep Precision Strike" capabilities featuring long-range weapons exceeding 2000 kilometers. The two countries have also agreed to strengthen cooperation in space-based defense technologies, particularly reconnaissance and missile early warning systems.

The alliance was demonstrated recently by the aerial refueling of French Rafale jets and German Eurofighters, symbolizing enhanced interoperability. Furthermore, Germany and France will participate in an upcoming multinational military exercise in Eastern Europe intended to support Ukraine and bolster allied readiness.

Discussions also touched on the possibility of permanently stationing French Rafale jets equipped with nuclear weapons in Germany, specifically at the Nörvenich base. Currently, these jets are only temporarily visiting Germany, and no definitive decision has been reached regarding their permanent deployment.

This enhanced partnership both complements NATO's US-led nuclear deterrence framework and respects international law, including adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, reflecting the close strategic alignment of Berlin and Paris amid evolving global security challenges.
