Germany and UK Forge Strong Partnership on AI Security

Germany and the United Kingdom have announced an enhanced collaboration to strengthen security in artificial intelligence (AI), highlighted during a recent meeting in London. German Federal Digital Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger and his UK counterpart Elizabeth Kendall jointly declared that their countries will cooperate closely through their respective AI Security Institutes to address growing challenges in AI safety.

The German National Security Council approved the establishment of Germany's AI Security Institute on June 8, a venture to be advanced by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport alongside the Federal Ministry of the Interior. This new institute will work in close cooperation with the already established UK AI Security Institute. The collaboration underscores both countries’ commitment to tackling the complex risks associated with AI technology on an international scale.

Dr. Wildberger emphasized Germany’s integration in European AI governance and the necessity of international cooperation for a key global technology like AI. He stated, "Today's agreement strengthens the international network for AI security and allows us to benefit from collaboration with a renowned partner like the British AI Security Institute." Similarly, Secretary Kendall pointed out the strong ties between the UK and Germany in science and mutual security interests, underscoring their governments’ dedication to harnessing AI's benefits while managing its risks thoroughly.

This initiative reflects the increasing prominence of AI security following concerns raised by developments such as Claude Mythos, highlighting the need for robust oversight and collaboration. Both countries have released a joint statement detailing their plans and shared determination to lead in advanced AI safety and security.
