Germany and Ukraine Collaborate on Long-Range Drone Development to Enhance Defense Capabilities

During a visit to Kyiv, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a joint plan to develop and produce drones with ranges up to 1,500 kilometers, marking a significant milestone in their defense cooperation amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. This initiative is part of a broader effort involving six joint arms production projects between the two countries, signaling a deepening partnership in military technology and security.

Pistorius emphasized Germany's intention to learn from Ukraine's battlefield experiences, especially regarding drone technology, highlighting existing gaps in NATO's European countries' long-range weapon capabilities. He noted that Ukraine is transitioning from a security consumer to a provider, aiming to contribute more broadly to European security. Additionally, Germany has trained nearly 27,000 Ukrainian soldiers so far, with plans to continue training even after a potential ceasefire.

Ukrainian President Zelensky expressed gratitude for Germany's additional air defense assistance against Russian attacks but withheld specifics to maintain strategic surprise. The collaboration also includes plans to explore integrating Ukrainian Battle-Management software into the German Bundeswehr, underscoring mutual technology exchange.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas commented on the shifting dynamics of the war, noting that Ukraine is in a stronger position compared to a year ago, while Russia suffers unprecedented losses. Pistorius also addressed recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin suggesting an end to the war, labeling them as potential deception tactics aimed at distracting from Russia's military struggles and ongoing aggression.

This joint German-Ukrainian effort reflects a strategic move to enhance defense readiness, technological innovation, and cooperation in response to the conflict’s challenges, marking a new phase in their partnership with significant implications for European security.
