Germany Boosts International Climate Diplomacy Ahead of COP31 Amid Geopolitical Challenges

Germany's State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth has embarked on a diplomatic mission to Australia to advance preparations for the upcoming COP31 World Climate Conference, scheduled for November 2026. In the context of escalating geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties, and an ongoing energy crisis, Flasbarth emphasized climate protection as central to global stability, security, and economic resilience.

Engaging with Australian Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen and other key stakeholders, Flasbarth's visit underscores the importance of collaboration with Pacific island nations that face severe climate impacts. Notably, COP31 will be co-chaired by Turkey and Australia — with Turkey hosting and Australia leading the negotiations — marking a new cooperative approach.
