Germany Closes Russian Consulate Over Leipzig-Halle Drone Incident Amid Strong Russian Backlash

Following a drone incident at Leipzig-Halle Airport, the German government has taken the significant step of closing a Russian consulate as part of its sanctions response. This move escalates diplomatic tensions between Germany and Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sharply criticized the German sanctions, calling them a "serious mistake" and demanding proof to support Germany's allegations, which he dismissed as "fabricated." Putin also suggested that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's actions are driven by internal political motives, citing Merz's loss of public trust.

Adding to the tension, Dmitri Medwedjew, former president and prominent Kremlin figure, accused Germany of harboring a "neo-Nazi" and "extreme Russophobic" leadership. Medwedjew threatened retaliatory measures specifically targeting German arms manufacturers supplying support to Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected the accusations as unfounded and accused Germany of supporting terrorism.
