Germany Commits €1 Billion at COP30 to Protect Tropical Rainforests

At the COP30 climate conference in Brazil, Germany pledged 1 billion euros to support the protection of tropical rainforests over the next decade. This commitment was announced by German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider and Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan, signalling strong German support for environmental conservation efforts in tropical regions. The funding will contribute to a rainforest fund initiated by Brazil that rewards countries financially for preserving their rainforests, aiming to reduce deforestation and its related carbon emissions.

The Brazilian host government unveiled this innovative fund during the conference, which includes penalties for countries experiencing deforestation, monitored via satellite imagery. A coalition of countries including Brazil, Norway, France, and Portugal has pledged over five billion US dollars to back this rainforest fund. Environmental organisations have praised Germany's involvement, viewing it as a crucial boost to the political momentum required for COP30's success.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, though initially non-specific about the funding details, alongside ministers, highlighted the importance of supporting climate protection and enhancing adaptation strategies for communities living in vulnerable tropical forest areas. Tropical rainforests, which play an essential role in absorbing CO2, face ongoing threats from deforestation, making these commitments vital for global climate goals.

COP30, which began on November 10, 2025, brings together delegates from over 190 nations to discuss more ambitious climate action measures and adaptation efforts.
