Germany Faces Over 1,000 Suspicious Drone Flights Targeting Military and Critical Infrastructure in 2025

In 2025, Germany experienced a significant security challenge with the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) recording over 1,000 suspicious drone flights across the country. These incidents predominantly targeted military sites, airports, and critical infrastructures such as defense contractors and port facilities, raising concerns about national security.

BKA President Holger Münch described the situation as a "pronounced threat" and highlighted the difficulty in identifying the operators behind these drone incursions. While some cases suggest state involvement—possibly by Russian actors—the exact identities remain uncertain due to challenges in apprehending and interrogating the pilots. Münch noted that drones might be used not only to cause psychological unrest but also for intelligence gathering, particularly at military locations where Ukrainian soldiers receive training.

To counter this growing threat, Germany inaugurated the Joint Drone Defense Center (GDAZ) in Berlin, which is set to begin operations in January. This center aims to enhance detection and neutralization capabilities against unauthorized drone flights. Additionally, the Bundespolizei established a specialized drone defense unit comprising 130 personnel. Equipped with AI-supported jamming systems and automatic intercept drones, this unit will be deployed at security-relevant sites across the country.

These developments come amid heightened vigilance as German authorities strive to protect critical infrastructure and maintain public safety.
