Germany Intensifies Security Measures Amid Rising Middle East Tensions and Terror Threats

Germany is responding with heightened vigilance as the recent escalation in the Middle East raises serious security concerns domestically. The National Security Council in Berlin convened to discuss the growing threats linked to developments in the region, with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz highlighting the danger posed by Iran's "terror regime of the mullahs." While Merz reassures the public that comprehensive safety steps are underway to protect Jewish, Israeli, and American institutions, he emphasized that currently there is no concrete evidence of a large-scale attack within Germany.

Security expert Peter Neumann warned that the risk of terrorist attacks in Germany must be taken seriously, particularly as pressure on the Iranian regime could provoke intensified assault attempts against Iranian dissidents, Jewish communities, and Israeli diplomatic missions. Felix Klein, the Federal Government’s Antisemitism Commissioner, stressed the direct connection between Middle East tensions and increased attacks on Jewish life in Europe. Klein warned that an assassination attempt on Iranian leader Ali Khamenei could trigger retaliatory actions orchestrated by Iran’s networks in Germany, targeting Jewish and Israeli institutions.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution also expressed concern that Jewish public spaces, such as schools and synagogues, might become targets of backlash linked to the Middle East conflict. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is currently consulting with state ministers to discuss further security enhancements.
