Germany Launches National Shield Against Drone Threats to Protect Critical Infrastructure

In response to escalating hybrid attacks involving drones targeting critical infrastructure, the German government has unveiled comprehensive measures to bolster national security. The Bundeswehr is actively conducting exercises using jammers to counteract drone threats, showcasing an operational commitment to defend key assets.

Central to the new initiatives are the establishment of rapid-response units stationed across strategically essential cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, and Leipzig. These specialized units will be responsible for securing airspace above vital locations such as airports and government districts, effectively creating a coordinated national shield against hybrid warfare tactics.

Interior Minister Wolfgang Dobrindt emphasized the increasing frequency of such hybrid attacks and asserted the necessity and feasibility of defensive measures. Chancellor Olaf Merz reinforced Germany's resolve to protect its democracy and territorial integrity in a speech at a CDU event, warning potential perpetrators and highlighting recent drone attacks such as the one at Leipzig Airport. The government attributes these incursions to Russia, which Moscow categorically denies.

Merz described hybrid warfare as a complex threat that blends military, economic, intelligence, and propaganda methods, complicating identification and response to attacks. He drew historical parallels to Cold War tensions and early 1980s rearmament debates, underscoring the need for steadfast vigilance.
