Germany Launches Zentrum für Safe Sport to Combat Violence in Sports

Germany has established the Zentrum für Safe Sport, an independent center dedicated to investigating and addressing physical, psychological, and sexual violence in sports. Scheduled to start operations in spring 2027, the center will be based in Kassel and is backed by a joint association of federal and state governments. The initiative aims to create standardized investigative procedures to foster trust among victims that their allegations will be handled thoroughly and independently.

The founding ceremony at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin featured Sports State Minister Christiane Schenderlein, who underscored the importance of trust in the center’s independent investigations. "Victims of violence must have confidence that their complaints will be investigated and addressed effectively," she stated.

While the center currently focuses exclusively on elite sports, it relies heavily on participation from around 100 member organizations within the Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund (DOSB). However, participation is voluntary, and there are no financial penalties for organizations choosing not to cooperate, a decision some critics believe limits the center's effectiveness. This means that the majority of the roughly 86,000 sports clubs and their members remain outside the center's scope despite evidence that two-thirds of club members have experienced some form of violence.

The athletes’ organization 'Athleten Deutschland' welcomed the center as a vital step forward, emphasizing that it brings German sports closer to providing victims with access to independent investigations and disciplinary processes. They also stressed the need for transparency and involvement of affected individuals to build trust in this complex and sensitive area.

Former professional footballer Nadine Dobler expressed hope, saying, "The establishment of the center is a promise that victims will not be left alone." The Zentrum für Safe Sport is seen as a pilot project and an important milestone in enhancing the protection of athletes within Germany’s sports system.
