Germany is considering participation in an international mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz amid tensions following Iran's effective blockade of the vital waterway. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated that Germany's involvement, potentially including mine-hunting and reconnaissance capabilities, depends on strict conditions such as the cessation of hostilities and parliamentary approval. Germany currently has eight mine-hunting boats and two P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft available for deployment.

SPD leader Matthias Miersch stressed that protecting trade is important but any decision should only be made once fighting ceases.
