Germany Pushes for Tomahawk Missile Purchase from the USA Amid Defense Gaps

Germany is actively seeking to procure Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States following the US's rejection to station these missiles on German soil, a move that has exposed significant gaps in Germany's defense capabilities. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is planning a trip to Washington to advocate for this purchase and the acquisition of the associated Typhon ground-based missile launcher system.

Germany submitted its request for the Typhon missile system last July, but the US has yet to provide a response. The success of Pistorius' upcoming visit depends on whether he can secure a meeting with his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth. However, this is complicated by strained diplomatic relations between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz amid the ongoing Iran conflict, introducing uncertainty around high-level talks.

Pistorius has highlighted that the US's refusal to deploy Tomahawk missiles in Germany has created a critical shortfall in the nation’s defensive posture. Originally, Tomahawk missiles were intended as a temporary solution until Europe could develop its indigenous missile systems. Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense announced in February a seven-year contract with Raytheon to ramp up Tomahawk production. Despite this, American stocks have been severely depleted due to the extended conflict with Iran, further complicating availability.

The Tomahawk missile, known for its long-range precision strike capability, remains crucial for Germany’s effort to bolster its missile defense amid new geopolitical pressures. The cancellation of Tomahawk deployment plans under the Trump administration—contrary to initial assurances by the Biden administration—has pushed Germany to seek direct procurement options.
