Germany Receives First F-35 Fighter Jet as Part of €10 Billion Modernization Plan

Germany has received its first Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighter jet, marking the start of a major defense upgrade costing approximately €10 billion, set to replace the aging Tornado fleet. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that the F-35's stealth technology, advanced sensors, and integration capabilities will significantly enhance Germany's air force and NATO's collective defense.

Germany plans to acquire 35 F-35A aircraft, with full delivery expected by 2029 and the initial six jets to arrive by the end of 2026. Pilot and technician training programs have already begun in the United States, with flight training scheduled to start later this year at Arkansas's Ebbing Air National Guard Base. Alongside the aircraft acquisition, the Büchel military airbase in the Eifel region will undergo a €2 billion renovation to meet stringent U.S. technical security requirements, a task described as highly challenging.

The F-35A will play a crucial role in Germany’s contribution to NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement, enabling nuclear deterrence without Germany maintaining its own nuclear weapons. However, concerns exist about the F-35's reliability and availability, as operational readiness in U.S. forces reportedly stands at just 28%, compounded by issues such as corrosion damage and spare parts shortages identified by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Analysts warn about the risks of dependency on U.S. technology.

Despite these challenges and the significant cost—each jet is priced around $200 million including training and maintenance—the German government views the acquisition as vital for strengthening NATO cooperation amidst geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding threats posed by Russia. The investment underscores Germany's commitment to modernizing its military capabilities and maintaining strong transatlantic defense ties.
