Germany Receives Its First F-35 Stealth Fighter Jet, Signaling New Era for Air Force

On September 18, 2026, Germany marked a pivotal milestone in its defense modernization by officially receiving its first F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter jet. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius personally accepted the aircraft in Fort Worth, Texas, underscoring the significance of this achievement for the German Air Force and NATO. Pistorius described the F-35 acquisition as the dawn of a "new era" for German air capabilities, highlighting the jet's advanced stealth features and cutting-edge sensor technology that enhances situational awareness.

Germany plans to procure a total of 35 F-35 jets by 2029, with the initial eight aircraft remaining in the United States at the Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas for pilot training through 2027. The first jets are scheduled to be stationed at Büchel Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate by the end of 2027, where they will play a critical role in Germany’s nuclear deterrence strategy.

The procurement forms part of a broader investment exceeding $30 billion that includes other defense projects such as the CH-47 Chinook, P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, and the Patriot missile system. German industry has been integrally involved in the F-35 program since 2001, notably with Rheinmetall producing fuselage components. Lockheed Martin emphasized ongoing and expanding cooperation opportunities with German firms across manufacturing, maintenance, training, and research and development to bolster both nations' defense economies.

Despite some concerns regarding the jet’s maintenance complexity and lower readiness rates compared to other aircraft, Pistorius addressed fears of excessive dependency on the US by stressing mutual cooperation. He also cited the F-35’s strong safety record with only 18 accidents worldwide, affirming confidence in the aircraft’s reliability.

With the F-35's delivery, Germany advances its commitment to NATO's deterrence efforts and strengthens transatlantic defense ties, reflecting evolving security dynamics and Germany's strategic defense priorities.
