Germany Records Nearly 12,000 Heat-Related Deaths in Summer 2026, Majority Elderly

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has reported an alarming total of approximately 11,900 heat-related deaths in Germany during the summer of 2026, with an unprecedented mortality peak during a single week in late June. Between June 22 and June 28 alone, an estimated 9,600 heat-related deaths occurred, marking one of the deadliest heat episodes in recent years.

The RKI's data reveals that the elderly are disproportionately affected by the extreme heat, with around 6,000 deaths in individuals over 85 years old. Other significantly impacted groups include those aged 75 to 84 and 65 to 74. This summer has already recorded four distinct heat weeks with steadily rising temperatures, including the exceptionally hot week in late June, where average weekly temperatures reached 26.4 degrees Celsius, contributing to a surge in mortality.

June 2026 has become the second warmest June on record in Germany, with many regions experiencing temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius. According to the RKI, heat rarely acts as a direct cause of death; instead, it exacerbates pre-existing conditions such as cardiovascular or respiratory diseases, making the elderly particularly vulnerable during heatwaves.

Dr. Matthias an der Heiden of the RKI emphasized that heatwave frequency is a relatively new phenomenon in Germany, posing challenges due to insufficient adaptation of infrastructure and social systems to such climatic stress.

The RKI uses a statistical model comparing weekly deaths during heat weeks to historical averages from 2016 through 2025, identifying excess mortality as heat-related. Despite the relatively small number of four heat weeks this summer, the heat-related death toll has already surpassed figures from previous years including 2018, when seven heat weeks and a peak temperature of 25.1 degrees Celsius were recorded.

As Germany confronts ongoing above-average temperatures this summer, public health concerns intensify, with experts calling for urgent climate adaptation and protective measures for vulnerable populations to mitigate further heat-related fatalities.
