Germany Reinforces Middle East Stability Efforts to Prevent New Migration Waves

German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan recently visited Jordan to directly address the destabilizing effects of the Iran war on the Middle East and to bolster Germany's migration prevention strategy. Initially planned visits to Israel and the West Bank were canceled due to security concerns, highlighting the volatile regional climate.

In Jordan, a key EU strategic buffer bordering Israel, Iraq, and Syria, Radovan inspected aid supplies destined for Gaza, underscoring how closed border crossings are severely limiting humanitarian assistance. She stressed the critical need to open more crossings to allow aid flow, referencing a 20-point plan by former US President Donald Trump aimed at easing such restrictions.

Radovan emphasized that in the "shadow of the Iran war," vital aid is arriving less frequently to Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis amid increasing violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Germany has responded with a €177 million financial aid package for Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestinian territories to support refugees and regional stability, an initiative backed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz who shares concerns over rising settler violence.

Beyond diplomatic efforts, Radovan engaged in development aid activities, including working with refugee children at a UNICEF center in Jordan, and met German soldiers stationed there following a recent Iranian attack affecting both American and German forces.

Jordan’s stability is thus pivotal for Germany's security and migration control aims, as the country hosts over 25% refugee populations. This visit signals a shift in German development policy toward prioritizing security-related migration prevention in volatile regions of the Middle East.
