Germany Reports Record High Defense Spending as NATO Ramps Up Targets

Germany's defense expenditure is set to hit a record 2.69% of its GDP, marking a significant increase from last year's 2.22%, according to NATO calculations. This rise reflects a 25.5% boost over the previous year, with planned spending for 2025 estimated at approximately 99.3 billion euros. The increase of around 25.4 billion euros represents the largest surge in Germany's recent history. Within the NATO alliance, only the United States allocates more funds to defense than Germany.

This development aligns with NATO's broader defense spending goals. Under pressure from then-US President Donald Trump at last year's summit, NATO members agreed to aim for 3.5% of GDP spending on defense by 2035. As of 2026, five NATO countries are projected to meet or exceed this target. Notably, Lithuania leads with 5.33%, followed closely by Estonia (5.10%), Latvia (4.92%), and Poland (4.68%). The United States itself is expected to reach 3.17% by 2026.

Germany's boost in defense spending signals its commitment to meeting NATO's benchmarks and strengthening the alliance's overall military capabilities. However, experts note that further increases are necessary for Germany to fully align with the alliance's long-term goals.

This substantial rise in spending also reflects geopolitical pressures and the increasing emphasis on collective defense within NATO amid evolving security challenges. Germany's position as the second-largest defense spender in NATO after the US underscores its growing role in European and transatlantic security frameworks.
