Germany Responds to Iranian Human Rights Violations Amid Diplomatic Strains

Germany is grappling with deteriorating diplomatic relations with Iran, primarily driven by severe human rights abuses and a significant reduction in visa processing at the German embassy in Tehran. Reza Asghari, a former political prisoner from Iran and now a member of Germany's CDU, highlighted that the Iranian regime views Germany as "the evil incarnate." This hostility has led to the temporary closure of the visa section of the German embassy, heavily affecting visa issuance, which plummeted from 46,600 in 2024 to just 1,300 in early 2026, according to the German Foreign Ministry.

The Ministry described the human rights situation in Iran as "desolate," with violent suppression of protests and systematic persecution of regime opponents. These developments have generated calls within Germany for a reform of its refugee policy to better accommodate those fleeing persecution. Despite the embassy's difficulties, efforts continue to support visa applicants amid increasing uncertainty, including concerns about possible U.S. military actions against Iran.

Asghari's position as a CDU parliamentarian underscores Germany's deepening awareness and engagement with the plight of Iranian dissidents.
