Germany-Russia Diplomatic Tensions Escalate After Leipzig Drone Incident

Diplomatic relations between Germany and Russia have sharply deteriorated following a thwarted drone attack near Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August 2026. German authorities suspect Russian intelligence services of orchestrating the drone attack, which involved an explosives-laden unmanned aerial vehicle discovered adjacent to a Ukrainian transport aircraft. German Interior Minister Volker Dobrindt has announced plans to strengthen protective measures against drones, cyberattacks, and sabotage, underlining concerns about increasing hybrid threats attributed to Russia.
