Germany's Nationwide Job Inclusion Initiative 'Schichtwechsel' Empowers Diverse Workforce

On September 27, 2026, the nationwide Aktionstag "Schichtwechsel" took place, a groundbreaking event allowing individuals with and without disabilities to exchange jobs for a day. Organized by BWMK gGmbH, the event involved around 400 workshops with approximately 5,000 participants, including 3,000 from workshops and 2,000 from the general labor market. In the Main-Kinzig-Kreis and Rhein-Main area, events at locations like Brockenhaus in Hanau and Bergwinkel-Werkstätten in Schlüchtern highlighted the capabilities of workshop employees creating high-quality products such as beekeeping accessories and city furniture. Luisa Ruppert, an IT professional who participated, praised the structured work accommodating diverse abilities, emphasizing that workplace inclusion depends not only on individual skills but also on work organization, as noted by BWMK managing director Mareike Meister.

Employers valued the diverse perspectives brought by employees with disabilities. Raif Moaremoglu of Rohm and Werner underlined the importance of different views to address complex challenges. Federal Commissioner Jürgen Dusel highlighted the persistently low transition rate from workshops to general employment and expressed hope that perspective changes like those enabled by "Schichtwechsel" could drive broader inclusion.
